Navigating the Adoption Process

Every year, thousands of wonderful parents choose to welcome a child into their home and family by the process of adoption.  Before proceeding with adoption, it is critical for families fully understand the legal realities of the adoption process.  Having quality legal representation to help the family navigate the adoption process is an important part of the process.

A wide variety of adoptions make their way through the Court system every year.  Stepparent adoptions, grandparent adoptions, international adoptions, agency adoptions and private adoptions are each unique in the nature of the paperwork and process that must be followed.

The road to adoption is sometimes very smooth, but frequently there are bumps in the road.  Examples include difficulty in locating the biological parents, achieving the biological parents' voluntary relinquishment of parental rights, proving legal grounds for involuntary termination of parental rights, obtaining the endorsement of the assigned social worker and amicus attorney (attorney appointed to assist the Court in protecting the best interest of the child). Additionally, if the child is being adopted from a foreign country, immigration issues must be resolved to bring the child lawfully to the United States in proper immigration status.  The good news is that most of these hurdles can be overcome, and the reward of having an adopted child is well worth the effort.
