HELPING RELATIVES BECOME PERMANENT RESIDENTS

Many people are confused about the legal ability to help family members become lawful permanent residents of the United States. Complex immigration laws govern the rights of individuals to immigrate, the qualifying relationships, and the length of time for processing the application.   This week's blog will address some of the principles that govern this confusing process of family petitions.

WHO MAY PETITION FOR A RELATIVE?

United States citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, may petition for their spouse and children, whether the children are married are unmarried.  Additionally, United States citizen petitioners that are over the age of 21 may petition for their parents and siblings.   Lawful permanent residents may petition for their spouse, children (under 21) and unmarried sons and daughers (over 21).

WHAT ABOUT MY RELATIVE'S FAMILY?

Generally, the relative's spouse and children (under 21) can also be joined in the petition and therefore qualify to become permanent residents.  For example, if a United States citizen marries a foreign national, the citizen can petition for the spouse and also any children of the foreign national spouse.

If you're considering filing a  petition for a family member, you don't have to go through the journey alone.  Individuals need quality legal representation to provide sound legal advice and assistance through the process.  The attorneys at Christiansen Law Firm can assist you with your immigrant petition goals.  Contact the attorneys at Christiansen Law Firm for experienced advice and assistance.
